A 37-year-old female traffic officer has died after being run over by a suspected drunk driver, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has said.

According to the JMPD, they had attempted to stop the male driver at the scene of an accident on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park.

“The female traffic warden was with other JMPD colleagues busy attending two accident scenes along the N12 between Golden Highway and K43 when the driver in the Sandero failed to stop and knocked the warden,” said spokesperson Xolani Fihla in a statement.

“On Saturday 02 July 2022 at about 03h00am JMPD officers and Traffic Wardens from By-Laws Management Unit were attending two accident scenes on the N12 West between Golden Highway and K43 in Eldorado Park. Whilst attending to the accident scenes, a beige Renault Sandero drove at a high speed hitting a 37-year-old female JMPD Traffic Warden, Luleka Sobetshe,” he further said.

DRUNK DRIVER TO BE CHARGED FOR JMPD OFFICER’S DEATH

They managed to apprehend the drunk driver and charged him with culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at an accident scene at the Eldorado Park police station.

The 28-year-old driver tested 0.69mg on a breathalyser, which is nearly three times above the legal limit of 0.24mg.

Councillor David Tembe, the MMC for safety in Johannesburg, has strongly condemned the behaviour of the drunk driver and called for him to face the full extent of the law.

“No officer or traffic warden should ever be injured or killed when on or off duty. The drunken driver will have to face the full might of the law,” Tembe said.
