Kaizer Chiefs have a number of players whose contracts expire in June while others face a bleak future despite still being contracted.

But with Stuart Baxter now gone as head coach, Chiefs could have a change of heart and decide to keep a few of them for the new coach.

The South African takes a look at five players who could survive the axe ahead of the new season regardless of who Chiefs appoint as head coach.

THE FIVE PLAYERS WHO COULD SURVIVE THE KAIZER CHIEFS AXE

KEARYN BACCUS

Baccus was nearly lost to Chiefs in January after he was offered an exit package but he turned it down and remained at the club despite not being Baxter’s favourite.

It is fair to say Baccus won the hearts of Amakhosi fans with his scintillating displays under Baxter, and with that said, being a ball player gives him the advantage.

DUMISANI ZUMA

Zuma has a running contract with Chiefs until June 2023 but his future is uncertain following his alleged drunk and driving arrest in November 2021.

The dimunitive midfielder was frozen out by Baxter but his talent and what he can offer Chiefs may save him from the dreaded axe.

DANIEL AKPEYI

Akpeyi might be one of the oldest players in the team but he remains one of the reliable goalkeepers at the club, especially with Itumeleng Khune out in the cold.

The Nigeria international is aging like fine wine, and has given his all since joining Chiefs – a different coach would put his experience to good use.

RAMAHLWE MPHAHLELE

Mphahlele remains one of the most loved players within the club – humble and experienced, and for those reason he could be kept beyond June.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns is also regarded as one of the leaders by Chiefs, and at 32, Mphahlele still has a few more years to offer the club.

LEBOGANG MANYAMA

For Manyama, it is a 50-50 situation simply because he is one of the players that could rise to the occasion at any given day with his big-match temperament.

However, he is injury prone and hardly gave Chiefs anything this season even with the cameo appearances under Baxter.
