Actor Will Smith touched down at Mumbai’s Kalina airport, in India, on Saturday 23 April, in what is his first public appearance since the controversial Oscars “slapgate” saga rocked Hollywood last month.
The Pursuit of Happyness actor’s impromptu trip to India is rumoured to be of a spiritual nature as the star was accompanied by a monk and seen wearing a religious necklace. While the news has not yet been confirmed, Smith will apparently meet his spiritual guru Sadhguru.

Videographer Viral Bhayani, who has 3.7 million Instagram followers, uploaded footage of the 53-year-old star’s arrival in Mumbai.
Although not confirmed, ETimes claims the star is visiting the city for a spiritual session.
“Will Smith is in the city to visit the ISKCON Temple in Kharghar. There are mantra meditations, pujas and aaratis held at the temple daily,” a source was quoted by the publication.
The Hindustan Times reported that Smith was staying in the lap of luxury though at the JW Marriott Hotel Juhu, a five-star rated luxury resort by the beach that features both an infinity pool and a salt water pool.
Will Smith and Sadhguru
This is not the first time the actor has visited India to participate in Hindu rituals, pujas and meditation sessions.
Back in 2020, Smith and his family made headlines when he spent time with the Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru, the founder of the Isha Foundation.
Who can blame Smith for embarking on a spiritual retreat after the roller coaster ride of personal setbacks following that Chris Rock slap?
Smith, who bagged the Best Actor Award for his role in King Richard at the Oscars 2022, walked on stage during the live telecast of the awards ceremony on 27 March and slapped host Chris Rock through the face after the comedian joked about the bald head of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, a medical condition that leads to hair loss.

The Slap’s aftermath continues to ripple through Hollywood though and Smith has faced an unrelenting wave of negative publicity.
After days of controversy, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on 1 April 1 with The Academy banning Smith from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.
Some of Smith’s projects are reportedly on hold following the incident. They include Bad Boys 4, which reportedly had been in active development, and Fast and Loose – a Netflix movie that was to star Smith as a crime boss who loses his memory.
In the latest announcement, Netflix reportedly also cancelled its sequel to Bright.
Marriage on the rocks?
There are also no shortage of rumours concerning the status of Will and Jada’s marriage. According to various US media outlets, including OK Magazine, the couple aren’t even on speaking terms at the moment.
