Man caught for BRUTAL murders of a mother (82), special needs daughter

Police said a man was arrested after he allegedly brutally murdered Rita Westpfaha (82) and her special-needs daughter Carol Westpfaha (58) in Oribi last month.

THE MAN WAS CAUGHT AND ARRESTED EARLIER THIS WEEK

Rita and Carol were attacked and stabbed in the back of their heads in their home.

Their car was stolen, but nothing was taken from inside the house. The car was later recovered in Amanzimtoti.

According to police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, the brutal murders happened on 26 May 2022.

THE MAN ALLEGEDLY STABBED THE MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTER

“It is alleged that on 26 May 2022 at 19:45, the bodies of a 75-year-old woman and her 58-year-old daughter were found at their house at Oribi Village in Pietermaritzburg.

“They were allegedly stabbed with a sharp instrument at the back of their heads. Nothing was taken inside the house except the vehicle that was stolen. The vehicle was recovered in Amanzimtoti the following day.”

Neighbours reportedly said they became suspicious when they saw the gate opened with no car inside. When they went to check, they said they found the woman, who’s in her 70s, and her daughter, who’s in her 50s, dead with blood on the floor.

Ngcobo said police arrested the 38-year-old Shane Steven Sam Boucher for the brutal murders.

HE APPEARED IN COURT ON FRIDAY

Boucher appeared at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The matter will be in court again on Monday, 20 June 2022.

“On Tuesday 14 June 2022 at about 14:30, a police officer was in the Bluff area when he noticed a man wearing a hoody covering his head and wearing a mask.

“When he saw the police officer, he dropped his head and walked into the shop. The officer became suspicious and alerted his colleague about his suspicions. He then followed the man inside the shop while his colleague stood guard at the entrance of the shop.”

THE MAN WAS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF MURDER, ROBBERY AND THEFT

Ngcobo said when the police officer approached the man who was at the till he noticed the man was trying to avoid eye contact with him.

“The police identified the man as a wanted suspect – Shane Steven Sam Boucher- for a double murder that was circulated recently.

“He was arrested and detained at Brighton Beach SAPS. He was charged with two counts of murder, robbery, and theft of a motor vehicle.”
