A 37-year-old mother from Dunnottar in Nigel, is facing a charge of premeditated murder and attempted murder, for allegedly killing her son, by giving him poison.
She appeared before the Nigel Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was granted R5000 bail.
SCAMMED MOTHER POISONS HER CHILDREN
The mother was arrested on 6 June 2022 after giving her two children poison. She claimed she was scammed of a large amount of money, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjane said.
“The mother poisoned her two children, a 7 years-old girl and a 16-years-old boy, after she was scammed with a large amount of money. After giving them poison, it is alleged that she drove with them towards Free State Province,”
She further said that when the mother and her children got to Frankfort in Free State, the children started falling ill. She then took them to the nearest hospital.
The boy child passed away upon arrival at the hospital. The girl was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and has been there ever since.
Mahanjane added that when the doctor realised that the children were poisoned, he called the police, who interviewed the accused.
MOTHER ARRESTED FOR MURDER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER
Following the interview with the police, the accused mother admitted to poisoning the children. The mother said she was scammed with a large amount of money, and had no means to take care of the children, even to pay school fees.
She was then arrested and transferred to Nigel where the offence took place.
“When police went to her place, a Tupperware container containing poison was found in the kitchen,”
She added the mother told the court, she intended to plead not guilty to the charges preferred against her.
The matter was adjourned to 24 August 2022, for further investigation.
