Makgopa had been on the Pirates radar for over a year, and the Soweto giants pounced as soon as Baroka’s relegation to GladAfrica Championship was confirmed.
Now, Khanye feels Pirates have again got it wrong with Makgopa, saying there are no signs of being a quality striker in the 22-year-old.

Khanye is of the view that Pirates could have retained the services of Gabadinho Mhango whom they used to sweaten the deal that saw Tapelo Xoki join Bucs from Usuthu.
While the former Amakhosi man admitted that Makgopa is a talented player, he believes the striker would have been better if he was properly nurtured.

For Khanye, Pirates should have tried to bring back Justin Shonga as a replacement for Mhango instead of signing Makgopa.
KHANYE QUESTIONS ORLANDO PIRATES’ DECISION TO SIGN MAKGOPA
“They (Pirates) are still losing the identity. I have a problem because I’d still go back to the question of why they let Mhango go. I understand that there is an issue of behaviour that we don’t know and that bill issue but it could have been resolved,” Khanye told iDiski TV.
“But releasing Mhango and bringing in the likes of Makgopa, I don’t understand. What have they done? I mean the team (Baroka) is relegated and he was playing there. He’s been given a platform in the national team but no sign of being a quality striker.
“Yes, you can see the boy played football in the lower leagues such as the SAB and ABC Motsepe League. He’s got natural talent that was never nurtured.”
“So, for him to sign with Pirates… it’s something I always talk about, identity. Why are you taking him to Pirates? Because there needs to be a solution in terms of a player who is talented, who’s got a big heart, someone who fits into the culture of the club; an identity that will see him create a magic out of nothing.
“They were supposed to replace Mhango with someone like Justin Shonga if they had to bring him back. So, what does it mean to bring in Makgopa? This means Orlando Pirates are making the same mistake,” added Khanye.
