R24 highway that links to OR Tambo Airport closed

 The R24 highway in the City of Ekurhuleni has been closed following a massive diesel spillage which caused five vehicle to crash and pile up on Sunday, 19 June. 

Two drivers have been hospitalised after the five vehicles crashed on the R24 highway  between Edenvale road on ramp and Barbara road off ramp in Edenvale, City of Ekurhuleni. 

R24 FREEWAY CLOSED DUE TO SPILLAGE 

The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg.

City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Management Services spokesperson, William Ntladi said the entire eastbound had to be temporarily closed due a massive diesel spillage which is alleged to have caused the pileup.

Ntladi said area coverage of the spillage took all four lanes for about eight hundred metres. 

“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes within Edenvale and Meadowdale. 

“Alternatively N12 freeway eastbound to join R21 direction O.R.Tambo airport. It’s unclear as to how long the clean-up operation will last before the reopening of the freeway.”

Motorists should expect delays when travelling on the R24 highway.
