Residents urged to stop circulating hoax videos


Western Cape residents have been urged to stop circulating hoax flood videos as officials work to bring relief to areas that have been affected by heavy rainfall in some parts of the province. According to the City’s Disaster Risk Management, they were disappointed to discover that people were reporting false incidents of flooding in some areas.

Several roads have been affected by the flooding while some parts have also been left without electricity because of the weather conditions.

The City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith has confirmed that officials are attending to several roads which have been left partially flooded by rainfall due to heavy rainfall in some parts of the province.

Intersections flooded at this stage include Japhta K Masemola and Duinefontein, Frans Conradie and Norwood, Borchards Quarry before the N2 in Nyanga 35th between Robert Sobukwe and Owen, Cape Town ETC reports.

According to the publication, informal settlements in Khayelitsha, Ottery, Langa, Strand, and Delft have been severely affected.

Meanwhile, areas such as Rosebank, Mowbray, Mitchells Plain, Hout Bay, Grassy Park, Philippi, Zeekoevlei Eastridge, Bridgetown, Mfuleni, Bantry Bay, Pinelands, Langa, Lansdowne, Bonteheuwel, Brooklyn, and Parow are experiencing power outages due to the weather.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management has also expressed disappointment in the number of hoax videos and false reports which have been reported:

“As emergency relief resources are carefully coordinated through DRM at this time, we appeal to the public to please refrain from sharing unsubstantiated reports or videos,” said Smith.

More areas affected include:

  • 16th Ave Ravensmead.
  • McIntyre circle at the foot of the bridge.
  • Flooding in Epping and 21st Street, Elsies River Industrial.
  • Partial Flooding on Vasco Boulevard ,Goodwood.
  • Flooding Dirkie Uys street, Goodwood
  • Station Road, Montague Gardens.
  • Cnr of Radnor and Spin Street, Parow Industry.
  • Milton Road.
