Soneva, a resort in the Maldives, is looking for a “barefoot bookseller” to stay in one of their villas for free. A typical stay at the luxurious villa is worth $36,500 (about R607,106) per night. The resort sits in Kunfunadhoo, a private island known for its pristine sandy beaches and unique marine life.

The role entails overseeing a pop-up bookstore, as well as running several social media pages. Applicants who send in their resumes must have extensive knowledge of English literature and be able to write and communicate in English.

The “lucky” bookseller will also be required to write monthly blog posts, weekly newsletters and engage with visitors of all ages.

As described in the job listing, previous “experience in bookselling/publishing is essential”. In addition, the chosen “barefoot bookseller” will be in charge of running creative writing classes, bibliotherapy, and tutor children between the ages of nine and 18.

According to Aimée Johnson, a previous “barefoot bookseller” in 2019, the job was a dream come true.

“Being the Barefoot Bookseller was an absolute dream. I got to meet amazing people, work with incredible books and live on a stunning luxury island. Very much the dream job!”

“The Barefoot Bookseller has become an integral part of the Soneva guest experience, providing much, much more than reading recommendations.”

According to Business Insider, the successful applicant will be earning $750 (about R12,473) per month, in addition to the free stay. The job begins in October and will span a year.

Soneva is a sustainable group of resorts and prides itself on “inspiring a lifetime of rare experiences”. It is also considered “the first barefoot luxury resort”.

The resort also boasts organic gardens, ice cream parlours, an open-air, overwater cinema, water slides and private observatories.
