Mulaudzi said their search and rescue unit was on-site together with Joburg Water searching for the child.

He furthermore said the search has now moved to the main pipeline in Eldorado Park – which is the last part of the search.

Mulaudzi reportedly said the chances of finding the boy alive were slim, and the operation had now been declared a search and recovery.

He furthermore said they opened every possible manhole from Dlamini to Lenasia in search of the boy.

Mulaudzi said the search would continue on Wednesday morning and that more assistance would be called in to help divert the water.

Michael Sun, the Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment and Infrastructure Services, said he was informed of the incident at approximately 11:10.

The missing six-year-old was allegedly playing near the manhole before he fell. Sun said Johannesburg Water was also on the scene helping the EMS unit with the search.

“I’ll be monitoring the situation as it unfolds and ensure no resource is spared to rescue him.”
