Much has been said this week about Kaizer Chiefs and their tricky contract situations.

SAGA: Njabulo Blom’s contract

As it stands, they look set to lose six first team players for free in June 2023. That’s if new contracts can’t be agreed. The makeup of that group of six is also interesting, with five of them 30 years of age or older, while one is 22 and completely indispensable.

Kaizer Chiefs should target these free agents in 2023

Maybe Chiefs need to get creative in the free agents market themselves, with a few enticing options potentially becoming available in January. Everyone loves a good bargain.

Andile Jali

At 32, Jali is hardly a spring chicken, but the Sundowns man certainly knows his way around the block. He’d be an excellent mentor for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and 22-year-old Njabulo Blom. Blom has all of the attributes to become a top-shelf midfielder, and Jali could help steer him in that direction. Is this likely to happen? No. Can we dream? Yes.

Thulani Hlatshwayo

One area of the Chiefs squad that might need a boost of experience is central defence. Eric Mathoho will depart in June, leaving Edmilson Dove (28), Zitha Kwinika (28) and Siyabonga Ngezana (25). 32-year-old Hlatshwayo could be a shrewd addition. He’s a man with bags of know-how in this league with stints at Ajax, Wits, Pirates and now SuperSport. He’s also collected 48 Bafana Bafana caps.

Siphesihle Ndlovu

The 26-year-old Pirates man isn’t a glamorous name, but he might be willing to provide a rotation option for Arthur Zwane. The diminutive central midfielder can also fill in at left-back, which is another appealing thing about him. Especially if Sisifo Hlanti doesn’t agree new terms. Ndlovu does have an option to extend with Pirates though, so Chiefs will need to force their hand if there’s any genuine interest.
