We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 25 November.

The number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases has risen to 71. The outbreak recently spread to Mpumalanga from Limpopo.

The missing woman from the US to South Africa to attend a wedding has been found.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has called on retailers and shoppers to ensure fire and life safety on Black Friday, 25 November 2022. 

Normally on Black Friday, shoppers who are looking to score savings on valued items that they intend to purchase flock to some retailers in larger than normal numbers, possibly overcrowding the capacity of some retail outlets.

There is uproar amongst ANC structures in Free State, after members of the Youth League’s Pando Tladi Branch made a shocking call to arms. 

The political group produced a poster, encouraging the KILLING of all Pitbulls in SA. This was done under the banner of ‘One Bullet, One Pitbull’.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has confirmed an incident where a Pitbull allegedly attacked a 15-month-old child on Wednesday afternoon, 23 November 2022 in Gonubie Farm, East London.

Measles outbreak: Lab-confirmed cases rise to 71

The number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases has risen to 71 from 56 over the last week, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

The cases are concentrated in two provinces. Limpopo – where the outbreak started in the Greater Sekhunene district – has 60 cases while Mpumalanga has 11.

The four affected districts in Limpopo have all been declared outbreak areas. They are Capricorn, Greater Sekhukhune, Mopani, and Waterberg. The Vhembe district, which has two lab-confirmed cases, did not meet the outbreak criteria.

MISSING US woman Sherry Waite found- more info here

The missing woman from the US to South Africa to attend a wedding has been found.

The 64-year-old Sherry Waite, a real estate agent from Carlsbad, California, USA, came to South Africa to attend a wedding.

She disappeared without a trace between the hotel door and the reception desk of a hotel at OR Tambo International Airport.

Child mauled by neighbour’s Pitbull was playing with the dog

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has confirmed an incident where a Pitbull allegedly   attacked a 15-month-old child on Wednesday afternoon, 23 November 2022 in Gonubie Farm, East London.

According to police, the boy was playing with the neighbour’s dog in Gonubie Farm when it attacked him. 

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said as the boy and the dog were playing, a passer-by who was also walking with a dog in the proximity of the yard, was seen by the Pitbull.

The dog breed has been the subject of intense scrutiny recently, after a spate of Pitbull attacks hit the headlines. The ANCYL Branch in question have asked community members to ‘find creative ways of eliminating’ these canines, if they are not returned to the SPCA.
